Rock Fire has burned 12,008 acres, burning 9 miles north of Independence, near Black Rock Springs Road and Hwy 395, Poverty Hills.

The Rock Fire started in the Aberdeen area, south of Big Pine, north of Independence at approximately 4:50 p.m. on Monday, July 21. The cause is under investigation. The fire is currently 12,008 acres and is 97% contained. Firefighters continue to engage in work on the Rock Fire. The fire continues to burn and firefighters are working hard to increase containment on all perimeters.
Impacted Trailheads on the Inyo National Forest include Sawmill, Taboose, Red Lake and Birch.
The Rock Fire is in Unified Command with CAL FIRE San Bernardino Unit, and the Inyo National Forest.
