The Far Draw, Doe Canyon and Ferris Fires began on June 27, 2026, all started by lightning. The three fires merged together and are all being referred to as the Ferris Fire. The fire is located approximately 15 miles northwest of Dolores, Colorado on the San Juan National Forest, Bureau of Land Management, and private lands.
Strong winds, high heat, low humidity and extremely dry fuels drove fire behavior for the first two weeks before monsoonal moisture moved into Southwest Colorado. More favorable weather beginning in mid July, including several days of rain, cloud coverage, and higher humidity levels, helped firefighters increase containment and stop fire progression.
