Nevada Team 1, a type 3 team, officially assumed command of the fire this morning at 6:00 AM. Management of the teams spent the previous day in meetings and field briefings with the outgoing type 4 team to ensure a smooth transition. The Team will continue managing with a full suppression strategy, using direct tactics where conditions allow and indirect tactics when necessary.

Fire showed increased activity yesterday, particularly in the small canyons and side drainages of Black Canyon. The highest priority is securing the southern and eastern portions of the fire to protect residences in the Reeder subdivision and along Lowry Water. Night operations continued patrolling in the Reeder subdivision and along Joe's Valley.

Structure protection efforts in Reeder subdivision will continue. Crews will scout and construct direct and indirect line on the south side of the fire. Crews and engines will continue to secure line on the east side of the fire. On the north and west sides of the fire, scouting and evaluation of suppression opportunities will continue. Steep and inaccessible terrain poses a challenge for direct suppression efforts in some areas of the fire. The contingency group will prep roads to create contingency lines.

Weather: Thunderstorms impacted the fire yesterday evening, producing 0.25-0.50” of rain over the area. Afternoon and evening storms will be more isolated today, with a 30% chance of rain. Temperatures will remain warm, with similar humidity levels. Winds will remain out of the west with gusts up to 25 mph, or briefly higher near any storms.

Smoke: The Central Utah Daily Smoke Outlook at the Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program page covers the Black Canyon and Widemouth 2 Fires. For the latest information regarding smoke and air quality, check AirNow Fire and Smoke Map.

Evacuations: The Reeder Subdivision remains under a “GO” evacuation order issued by the Emery County Sheriff’s Office. Residents should follow all evacuation instructions and stay informed through official sources.

Stay up to date on evacuation orders by visiting the Emery County Sheriff’s Office  Facebook page. Conditions can change quickly. Heavy equipment and fire vehicles are working in these areas, so please drive with caution and be alert for unexpected fire traffic on narrow roads.

Closures and Safety: A temporary flight restriction is in place over the fire area. Recreational drones entering this restricted area forces aircraft to shut down wildfire air operations.

For public safety, the Manti-La Sal National Forest has issued an updated temporary closure (Forest Order #04-10-26-02-02) for portions of the Ferron Ranger District. This expanded closure includes Spring City Canyon Road (FS Road 0036), and FS Road 0014 (Millers Flat). A map of the closure area is available at https://www.fs.usda.gov/r04/manti-lasal/alerts
